A pontoon boat is a great boat because of the square footage there is on the deck. They are flat boats and they stay afloat buy way of two or three aluminum cylinders. Back in the day about 40 years ago the first pontoon boat was constructed, they made the pontoons by welding together barrels. There was a couple of down side to this those, one that many of these barrels would contains oils, which would make it extremely difficult to weld them together. The other major disadvantage to this is that they would weigh a lot, which would mean you would need a powerful motor if you ever wanted to reach a decent cruising speed.
Then it was decided to make the cylinder pontoons out of aluminum. The reason they use aluminum for the pontoons is because it is a light metal, and it can be extremely durable in the water. Another reason they use aluminum for the pontoons is because of rust and corrosion, being that pontoon boats have the pontoons made from aluminum this will let them last forever in the water. There are actually multiple barrels that are welded together just like in the old days, the reason for this is that if one of the barrels gets punctured, the boat will not sink.
Once the pontoons are constructed, they are connected by beams, and then the deck is then mounted onto the beams. This will provide exceptional buoyancy and will minimize the rocking of back and forth of the pontoon boat. When the pontoons get to the front, or the bow of the boat they will slant at an angle on to the bottom of the deck. Mostly all of the bigger pontoon boats that are out there have outboard motors on them, this is just easier because of the way they are designed.
